FAQs
Question Answer

Is Acupuncture painful? In extremely rare cases. The needles are incredibly thin and are not the same type used in traditional western medicine for intraveneous purposes or injections. Most people will either feel nothing or a slight prick upon needle insertion.

Is there anything I should do before an acupuncture treatment? Yes. Please make sure that you have had something to eat within the last few hours prior to treatment. However, please do not brush your teeth, use mouthwash , or brush your tongue prior to your visit. Examination of the tongue and mouth are vital areas used in diagnosis of various aspects of the body's state of health.

What can I expect during an Acupuncture treatment? Apart from the needling procedure the tongue is viewed and the pulse is taken. Most people find treatment relaxing. However, if you are afraid of needles, please discuss this situation with the practitioner prior to the beginning of the session so that he or she can answer any questions you may have regarding the treatment process.

Is there anything I should do after a treatment? Under most cases, rest is suggested, but will depend on the course of treatment and your general condition.

Can the needles spread disease? As mentioned earlier, acupuncture needles do not resemble western medicine syringes in any manner. Acupuncture needles are designed to be used only once, and then disposed of immediately after treatment. Your practitioner should use only sterile, FDA approved needles during the course of treatment.

What conditions are commonly treated by acupuncture? Usual conditions include, but are not limited to, stress whether due to occupation or hectic daily routine, emotional or physical stresses placed on the body due to daily living activities, accident, injury, or disease processes, pain relief and pain control, headache and migraines, cold and flu, smoking, anxiety, depression, neuralgia, stroke rehabilitation, PMS, menopausal symptoms, other gynecological problems, weight loss, sleeping disorders, etc.

Is Acupuncture or Reiki or BodyTalk covered by my insurance? Some insurance plans are now covering acupuncture, check with your plan provider. Also check the guidelines set in your flexible spending account regarding other forms of energy therapy such as acupuncture, Reiki, cranial sacral therapy, etc...

Is Acupuncture beneficial for children? Absolutely. Children respond very quickly to energy therapy as in most cases, they do not have the stress experiences of most adults. Consequently, their body is usually able to respond to and recover from trauma more quickly and with fewer treatments.

What is qi?

Qi is in all parts of our body, and is involved in all actions and occurrences. I believe that qi is most easily understood by it's functions some of which are listed below.

(1) It is responsible for growth and development as well as all physiological activities

(2) It controls body temperature

(3) It prevents exterior pathogens from entering our body

(4) It nourishes blood and body fluids

What is the yin and yang principle? "Yin and yang reflect all the forms and characteristics existing in the universe." (The Book of Changes) Yin and yang are opposite in nature and yet they depend on each other and therefore complimentary. For example, yin is water and yang is fire. Water extinguishes fire, but in order to bring water to a boil fire is needed. Both are opposite yet interdependent.

What are the 5 elements? Namely: fire, earth, metal, water and wood. The theory basically is that everything in the natural world corresponds to one of these 5 elements. These 5 elements and their relationships between each other explains what goes on within our own bodies as well as in the natural world.
